Garfunkel And Oates Rock The Up Comedy Club

Garfunkel and Oates LIVE @ UP Comedy Club
So unless you live in a cave I will assume that most of you are familiar with Second City.  I will also assume most of you are aware that Second City has opened a multi-million dollar, comedy hybrid performance space (shows will be a mix of stand up, sketch and improvisation) , called "The UP Comedy Club". February is their grand opening month and it looks like they are pulling out all the stops so to speak.

Case in point, I went to check out the comedy/folk singing duo (much funnier then it sounds) Garfunkel and Oates at the super swank venue last Friday. The pair consists of actress-songwriters Kate Micucci (Oates) and Riki Lindhome(Garfunkel). They met at the Upright Citizens Brigade theatre in Los Angeles and have been tearing shit up like maniacs ever since.  Million upon millions of hits on YouTube, appearances on The Tonight Show, guest spots on prime time network TV shows and a freaking HBO special in the works.  Basically these woman are hot as lava right now.  Do they deliver on stage?  Yep, sure do.  Lots of funny songs with great catchy titles like "weed card", "sex with ducks" and my favorite "pregnant woman are smug".  The ladies have a great banter back and forth with a natural ability to stay improvisational and spontaneous.  Which is a lot harder then it looks when you have to do two shows a night for weeks at a time.  The songs get a bit cutesy, and they are definitely working a schtick to some degree but that's kind of the charm of the duo.  The cuteness brings you in, but it's the intelligence and sharp wit of their well crafted humor that keeps you engaged. Underneath it all is the undeniable fact the both of them are in fact, quite talented musicians (despite their self deprecating comments to the contrary).
All in all a wonderful show.  I was definitely aware of this act and watched their videos on YouTube so it was cool to hear that they were coming to town. The fact that they can play at UP is extra sweet because it really is a perfect, beautiful, state of the art venue that has all the bells and whistles that really help an act like Garfunkel and Oates shine.  Meaning the sound and acoustics were superb, the lighting perfect. Kudos to the Up Comedy Club for booking a such a talented act that will hopefully set the bar high for future bookings (so looking forward to Brian Posehn this weekend!).

Now one very minor complaint. It would have been nice to have seen at least one local female comic fill the host and/or feature slots. Those duties were handled by couple of somewhat mediocre male comics I've never seen before. They said they were from Chicago, but I've never seen them in two years of attending at least a hundred local showcases. I only bring that up because there are so many great hardworking local comics in this scene that are chomping at the bit to get a shot on that wonderful stage. But if the UP Comedy Club maintains this high level of quality acts, I'm sure they will.
