What's Popping!

Hal Sparks
OK... I know I say the same shit every time I plug a bunch of shows, but damn... there is a whole butt load of great comedy going on in Chicago right now. This upcoming week is going to be extra bananas, especially with the TBS Just For Laughs Festival auditions that are happening, so try to hit as much as you can.

First I want to mention a couple of shows that have just finished but deserve some honorable mentions as important events in the Chicago comedy scene.

Adam Burke
On Thursday I went to the UP Comedy Club for the Midwest semi final bracket of Rooftop Comedy's National College Comedy Competition, sponsored by TBS Just For Laughs and Wendy's. They asked me to be a judge, (I know, I was shocked too). Adam Burke, fresh off his show Unlimited, hosted like a champ and Hal Sparks was the special guest spot.  Sparks who is a Chicago native spoke directly to the college students with pearls of wisdom like "fuck the judges, trust your instincts" of which I agree wholeheartedly.

On Saturday Comedian Danny Kallas performed live at The Des Plaines Theater This is a huge, revitalized, gorgeous theater that was built in 1925 and is an amazing venue for comedy.  Big props to the producers for having the sense to book some of the best local comics around.

The South Beach Comedy Festival.  This popular comedy festival, which came and went this weekend, featured comedic heavies like Lewis Black, Bill Bellamy and Marc Maron.  Props to Chicago's own Hanniball Buress, Brian Babylon and Renee Gauthier who featured at the fest.

Here what's coming up, all of it great.
